Low Poly is a term used to describe a mesh/outline of a shape in a 3d computer graphics however has now been turned into a popular style of 3d design that has reversed the traditional direction for higher quality 3d renders. (D Derakhshani & R Lorene Munn) Low Poly relies on the designs to be simple forms and blocks of colour meaning rendering is faster and more efficient. In its original form it came from being an undesirable interface that 3D designers had to deal with when modelling in 3d graphics programs.
Timothy J. Reynolds is a 3D illustrator who explores low Poly design in a interesting and diverse ways. Within low poly he uses several techniques like isometric design, which gives the effect of having lots of depth, and predominantly used to make a section of land giving the effect of seclusion or individuality. Another effect continuously show in his work is the crumpled paper effect. This is when the lighting a choice of textures is designed to give a rough effect producing a more real world appearance.
Timothy J. Reynolds work is interesting for several reasons. Firstly his use of textures combined with low poly design. This is something not regularly seen before because generally designers tend to keep to, simple in design simple in colour however he opposes this and use textures to give a more depth and feel to the illustration. Secondly his use of lighting in the scenes which is not overpowering but lights the areas very well that gives them a subtle and inviting texture.
Low Poly style is something I have seen before but never understood how to create and reproduce such design style. Recently I have been learning Blender which is a 3D computer graphics that I’m going to use to make these 3D models. Im going to make a landscape of mountains, rivers and trees using the technique in Blender to hopeful produce so interesting images.
